Baatez is sometimes known as the prison planet. When the gods first called council among themselves and laid down the laws for pantheon and dominion, the topic of devils was discussed, and the problem of what to do with them. For those former divine servants whose destruction might cause as much trouble as the lack thereof, an alternative solution was devised – namely that a certain unoccupied planet would be set aside as a prison for those who defied the rule of the gods. After some time, some wars, and several divine treaties, the exile of mortals to that realm was also permitted.
Few travel to that realm willingly, but those who have done so and survived the experience describe it as a land where the inhabitants are as harsh or harsher than the geography, and only the most tentative of social constraints prevents wholesale bloodshed and slaughter – but for all that, eminently safer than Tanar. The presence of ‘goodly’ outcasts of evil gods, and that of exiles who crave redemption, has imposed a strange modicum of order that will allow savvy travelers to survive. The addition of mortal blood to the mix has permitted a variety of strange crossbreeds as well as a myriad of religious cults, such that it may be possible that gods have evolved inside the domain of that prison planet.
In fact, the greatest danger to any travelers to Baatez might be upon their return to Koth, for the gods look very poorly upon any arrivals from that destination. Most travelers are advised to make stops on other planetary planes, or else departure via auroraship.
